Video Analysis - Robbery within the vicinity of your Home

How Secure is your home?
Crime rate increases year after year. People getting mugged, robbed kidnapped and rape for all sorts of reasons & places, this includes our very own homes. Your house may have the greatest security equipments to prevent home break-ins. That's pretty much it, its only prevention, however Robbers & Offenders are getting more and more creative with their approach.

Like many self-defence instructors will always tell you is to strike the weakest point to get the job done. So even robbers would struck the weakest link in any security equipments you throw at them.......YOU!!!

What you just saw is a common middle class residential homes found in Asia (Malaysia to be specific). Residential houses like these are commonly equip with CCTV cameras and large automatic gates. Some gates have sharp tips on them.

What you just saw in the video above are two motorcyclist doing a common tailing their prey and pounce by "give me your ......." scenario with a large knife (cleavers or sharp objects are easily obtainable in hardware stores). These motorcyclist are known to be the "Mat Rempits" which are common thugs on cheap motorcycles. Equip with bike helmet for head protection & concealment, cleavers to inflict fear and injury and motorcycle for a fast getaway.

At the above scenario the lady parked her car and waited for the gate to fully closed before exiting the car (Safety tips must do: always look around to see its safe before exiting your car) To the lady's bad luck the auto-gate didn't function as it should and the motorcyclist are able to easily force his way through the gate and strike the weakest link....Her.

This is an example of when we are at our most vulnerable moments. You are both locked in a space where its only you and the robbers lowering your chance for escape and call for help.

Another example below of how these thugs commonly attack their victim at the vicinity where the victims are locked in a space where they cant call for help.

In the Video above the victims got out of the car, unknowingly there was the motorcyclist tailing them. they strike them out in the open knowing there is no one that can save them. The owner of the house are too afraid to open the door or it may escalate from a simple robbery to a house break-in.

(safety tips: for both videos the most important thing is to always give them what they want, avoid confrontation. Give them what they want and hope they run away. Except if they want something other than your money, watch and bags.)

"Its the importance of space awareness and the exiting and entering of your safe space as fast as you can"

The greatest weakest link in any security is always you. How you are mentally prepared to be aware of the dangers, how well prepared are you and the knowledge of needing to prevent and take action on dangerous situations.

So the moral of these video analysis is that we have to always be vigilant and remind ourself of the dangers around us. Always make sure of your surrounding is safe before exiting your current safe space. Robbers are creative bunch and no amount of prevention equipments can completely make you safe. Out on the streets or in the comfort of your own home.

How safe are you at home or on the streets??

Am i well prepared to defend myself by taking Martial Arts/Self Defense courses? NO!!!

Would you know what to do?
A colleague of mine asked me if they learn a few tricks in Martial Arts/ Self defense classes would prepare them enough to defend themselves against any assailant? My answer is always  "well...that depends but mostly NO!"

In all of my previous blogs I've always stressed the importance of the teaching syllabus & the importance of learning from the right instructors. However by having those is only half of the equation, the other half is of course............

Obviously YOU!!!!!

Think of this as if you are learning how to cook for the first time. A 1 1/2 hour session is not going to prepare you to make the perfect spaghetti bolognese. You need to practice & practice, trial & error, study the flavors. You need to learn the cooking techniques and timing, sometimes even looking at ethnicity styles of all the above. And above all else Learn some more. Then with all the understanding will you be able to have the confidence to even start serving this to the public.

That goes the same for learning Martial Arts/Self Defense courses.
Ever heard of the term....
(Amongst many other Martial Arts)
"Martial Arts is the way of Life"

Surprisingly not many actually understood the meaning of the above. Some may confuse it to be a new "mystical life" they are entering. Which to some may devote their entirety of their life in pursuing the meaning behind it. Strictly my opinion it is essentially a commentary of yourself and your everyday 'way of life'. If you slack on your training, chances are you are slacking on other activities you say you would do. like.....going to the gym to loose weight.

You do what you do, you put the effort into perfecting your craft, you follow through with your heart or through rationale mind thinking. You do the things you say you will do or you are just a slacker are all reflected in the way you train in your Martial Arts/Self Defense...or any other craft.

"How you do anything is how you do everything" - T.Harv Eker

So if you learn a technique to defend yourself and not review it and practice it and going through trial and error, chances are a 1 1/2hour course on escaping from chokes is not going to prepare you for someone with a knife.

So to followup on more useful tips which i think maybe useful to my colluges to prepare themself of a situation is to understand the importance of the vital points or specifically where its going to hurt the attackers when you try to escape an attack.

*Disclaimer - the video below is just for educational purposes in understanding human anatomy. The information is for to be used on SELF DEFENSE purposes only. By no means should anyone purposefully strike these weak points other than to escape life threatening assailants/attacks. No one (me included) will take responsible of any legal damages other than the person doing the strikes.*

Take the info above as you will. Understanding such fundamentals can help in situation in many tense situations. So with constant reviewing, practices trial and error and gain as much common sense knowledge as possible, then that will answer the question whether you will be well prepared to defend yourself on the streets.............. Maybe.

Self Defense for Senior Citizen - a street fight case study

'Stay back you scoundrel!'
Now this here topic is nothing new, violence can happen to anyone anywhere and anytime, Woman children and even grown man, however what i find really interesting is the lack of discussions and instructional videos for the elderly when it comes to self defense on the internet. This caught my interest and decided blog about it with whatever i can find.

Disclaimer - this blog is not the definitive guide to encourage/nor discourage elders to react violently back against offenders to defend themselves - the purpose of this blog is to create an awareness and a sort of case study of what is available out there on the internet.

Of course as always when are faced in a threatening situation the best way is to get out the way alive, so should a potential violent encounter can be prevented that will be the very best route. When facing in real life threatening situation and no other way out the only viable option is to neutralize the situation quickly and get away from the scene.

Take note i say Neutralize instead of Fighting back, there is a difference!
and this is especially true to those who are not Martial Arts/ Self Defense trained not to mention Children & Elderly.

Fighting back will only anger the offender and that will trigger an event more violent temper out of you trying to 'Fight Back' however by neutralizing can be more than just flailing arms/kicking. Should you are able to neutralize the situation by saying 'sorry - here take my money, I dont want any trouble' that is also one of many ways to neutralize the situation (again not a definitive guide)

The above video is a movement which i am glad to see, the instructors take upon themselves to selflessly teach the elders some techniques so they may not feel as vulnerable when walking alone on the streets. It is quick to learn very practical for the elderly's age (although not limited to only the seniors) and it have some points that i made in my previous blogs as well.

  • If all else fails it's definitely something for the senior citizen to keep themself busy and beneficial for their health by exercising and moving around.
  • Cane Fu - is as literal as it gets - it is a tongue in cheek self defense style involving using the walking cane/stick. For those of you remembered in my other blogs, a walking stick is a legalize (and common) item to carry around that can act as an improvised weapon to create distance from your attacker.
  • The attacks was taught to go straight for the weak points. quickly neutralize the assailant.
Above are all positives feedback i have in regards to the intentions being taught
  • Of course what was being taught is a noble cause, however there will be people questioning the implication wether elders should be taught to hit back, risking the dangers of a stronger assailant to acting far more violent than before. As well as the understanding of their own physical limit.

This is a question no one will have the answer to however it is definitely a discussion that needs more attention.

Self Defense's Tips by Dr. Phil

Self-Defense Tips by Dr. Phil

When something shocks us, we typically freeze, and that's what the bad guys rely on. The key to not freezing is having a plan. Marni Levine is a fourth-degree black belt in karate and is the highest ranked female instructor in Krav Maga; a self-defense method used by the Israeli Defense Forces and U.S. law enforcement agencies. Dr. Phil invites her on the show to go over some typical scenarios and the do's and don'ts of protecting yourself from an attacker.

The scenario:
You're in a parking garage and you're loaded down with lots of shopping bags. This is an ideal opportunity for an attacker.

    Do:

  • Walk toward your car with your keys ready. Don't be distracted with your shopping bags.
  • If he's asking for your property — purse, money, car keys — give it to him
  • RUN, preferably toward a well lit, public area where there will be people.
  • If he's trying to get you into your vehicle, fight! Scream, scratch, bite, kick, strike — do as much damage as possible to stun the attacker, so you can run away.
  • Use your environment. In survival confrontations, everything at hand can be used to help you escape. Throw your keys, purse, coins, sand, gravel, rocks at the attacker's face. Use it as a distraction so you can escape.

    Don't:
  • Don't get into a vehicle with the attacker. You never want to let him take you to a second location. Statistically, it is not in your best interest. If you get into the vehicle, he has a much better opportunity to drive to a quiet place where you'll be 100 percent at his mercy and have no way of getting help. Even if he's pointing a knife or gun at you, do whatever you can to get away. It's much more likely that he will leave to find an easier target than chase you and draw attention to himself.

    The scenario:
You're at the ATM and have just gotten cash. As you walk away, you're distracted with putting your money away. (Put it away before you walk away from the ATM)

    Do:
  • Always be aware of your surroundings. The number one self-defense technique is being aware of potential threats. Know what the possible dangers are. Note where the exits are.
  • Notice the people in your area. Make eye contact — aggressors tend to back down if they notice you noticing them.
  • Put your money into a pocket immediately.
  • If you see a suspicious person nearby watching you, change your route and walk in the opposite direction.
  • Act confident. Do not act or look like an easy target.

    Don't:
  • Don't be oblivious of your surroundings.
  • Don't count your money or be putting it in your purse as you walk away. This distracts you and is a perfect opportunity for the attacker.
  • Don't wander without direction. Walk briskly, head up, with purpose. Don't look intimidated.

Street Fight Zero Rules - Self Defense Tools 'Baseball Bat Flashlight'

What you see with the picture above is a heavy-duty aluminum flashlight shaped like a baseball bat, a tool used primarily for self defense. It comes with15-inch and 23-inch in length and equipped with a 3-watt LED bulb with various flashing modes.

Why I find this self defense tool to be unique is that it combines 2 self defense application tools into 1. The practicality of having a powerful flashlight for various situations and an easy to wield tool for hitting an aggressor. Another practicality behind it's size and shape. Certain countries where vehicles are banned to carry sticks or batons so with the tool above, it passed as a normal flashlight, and for its size drivers can easily placed it at the shoulder of their seat.

For first time self defense learners below are some videos to show how this 2-in-1 tool can be applied in a vehicle self defense scenario. Courtesy of youtube : -

Below is some tips from Krav Maga on how to be more alert when getting into your vehicle. Also another good place to have your Baseball Flashlight is to put it at the back of your car for easy access.

As seen in the above video Krav Maga specializes in self defense and the emphasis in getting out of a situation fast, particularly on situational awareness and knowing how to react when it occurs. Some basic examples such as,

Situational Awareness - to be alert of the environment and the people surrounding. Trained the eyes to look at people's hand positions or what they were holding and even body language of suspicious body language & postures.

Stress management - trained in high stress situations where real scenarios happened

Weapon Improvisation - trained to identify an improvise self-defense tools and use them as leverage.

Execute hard & fast - Krav Maga specializes in taking out aggressors hard and fast when all else fails, all the sole purpose to run away from the situations fast.

    Street Fight Zero Rules

What is going through your head right now?
Imagine yourself were forced in to this situation right now, what are things that are going through your mind? What are the noises you hear in your head, was it the aggressor yelling and screaming? or was it drowned by the noises of your own thoughts? Can you think fast enough to handle such situation or are your legs shivering that you couldn't even move an inch? Who's faces are you seeing at that moment, was it the aggressor with the weapon? or was it the faces of your loved ones?

Those are floods of emotions and questions you will feel upon the split seconds of you realizing that your life is being threatened. Some of you may have many years of Martial Arts on your belt and may think your way to diffuse the situation and......BANG! all the hard training & the emotions all gone in an instant.

In your eyes and in your heart are telling the aggressor that you "are going to Kung Fu your way out of this situation" and that is all the aggressor needs to pull the trigger on you.
