Self Defense Tips by Discovery Bear Gryll

Edward Michael "BearGrylls (born 7 June 1974) is a British adventurer, writer and television presenter. He is best known for his television series Man vs. Wild, known as Born Survivor in the United Kingdom. In July 2009, Grylls was appointed the youngest-ever Chief Scout at the age of 35.

In 2010, Grylls' came out with a new project titled Worst-Case Scenario which aired on Discovery in the USA. It is based on the popular books of the same name. Unfortunately after 12 episodes the show was canceled. I've come across one episode where he showed essential tips that are rudimentary to self defense & self protection in a survival situation on the streets.

*Have an open mind of the video and not fall under the trap of a choreograph scene &/or practical situation*

Note: ignore the first 40 seconds - its only an unrealistic staged choreograph.

Essential Tips by Bear Gryll

"Self Defense is part instinct but mostly training & preparation"

Training & Preparation is the key in protecting yourself. Instinct only works if you educate and trainedunder the similar situations. And with such preparation only then you can act instinctively. One of many examples of preparation is to pull out your keys before heading to your car/always have your self-defense tools readily accessible when caught off guard.

"Rule of Self-Defense, to create distance or close distance"

This rule varies on situations & individuals - Not everyone are trained to do an arm lock or know hows what to do when closing in the distance. My rule of self defense is to create as much distance as possible for better survival. Having a long stick as a weapon to create distance raises your chances of survival is better than giving the assailant the chance to reach you by getting close to them.

"Learn to always walk away"

When the chance presented itself always walk/run away from the person/scene. For all you know there may be a group of his friends in the area that would come to help your attacker and the situation escalates to worst when there are a group of them ganging up on you.

"Don't need force to hinder an attack"
(Hit with something sharp & hit weak points)

As seen in video, hitting your assailant with something sharper than your fist is more affective than trying to pull a big fist to knock someone out. Goes back to the above tip, having a car key is enough to make the assailant flinch away hard. Should you know where to hit is most affective and don't require a lot of energy. As thought in the video those are the weak spots of hitting.

In the end, trust your instinct and avoid confrontation all together if possible. Self Defense's Tips by Dr. Phil

Self-Defense Tips by Dr. Phil

When something shocks us, we typically freeze, and that's what the bad guys rely on. The key to not freezing is having a plan. Marni Levine is a fourth-degree black belt in karate and is the highest ranked female instructor in Krav Maga; a self-defense method used by the Israeli Defense Forces and U.S. law enforcement agencies. Dr. Phil invites her on the show to go over some typical scenarios and the do's and don'ts of protecting yourself from an attacker.

The scenario:
You're in a parking garage and you're loaded down with lots of shopping bags. This is an ideal opportunity for an attacker.

    Do:

  • Walk toward your car with your keys ready. Don't be distracted with your shopping bags.
  • If he's asking for your property — purse, money, car keys — give it to him
  • RUN, preferably toward a well lit, public area where there will be people.
  • If he's trying to get you into your vehicle, fight! Scream, scratch, bite, kick, strike — do as much damage as possible to stun the attacker, so you can run away.
  • Use your environment. In survival confrontations, everything at hand can be used to help you escape. Throw your keys, purse, coins, sand, gravel, rocks at the attacker's face. Use it as a distraction so you can escape.

    Don't:
  • Don't get into a vehicle with the attacker. You never want to let him take you to a second location. Statistically, it is not in your best interest. If you get into the vehicle, he has a much better opportunity to drive to a quiet place where you'll be 100 percent at his mercy and have no way of getting help. Even if he's pointing a knife or gun at you, do whatever you can to get away. It's much more likely that he will leave to find an easier target than chase you and draw attention to himself.

    The scenario:
You're at the ATM and have just gotten cash. As you walk away, you're distracted with putting your money away. (Put it away before you walk away from the ATM)

    Do:
  • Always be aware of your surroundings. The number one self-defense technique is being aware of potential threats. Know what the possible dangers are. Note where the exits are.
  • Notice the people in your area. Make eye contact — aggressors tend to back down if they notice you noticing them.
  • Put your money into a pocket immediately.
  • If you see a suspicious person nearby watching you, change your route and walk in the opposite direction.
  • Act confident. Do not act or look like an easy target.

    Don't:
  • Don't be oblivious of your surroundings.
  • Don't count your money or be putting it in your purse as you walk away. This distracts you and is a perfect opportunity for the attacker.
  • Don't wander without direction. Walk briskly, head up, with purpose. Don't look intimidated.

    An Article about Krav Maga

    Krav Maga For Self Defense
If you are looking to get into martial arts for sport, style or fines then I would say that Krav Maga is not for you. Bottom line this is a no BS self-defense system. It is the official self-defense system of the Israeli Special Forces and has been taught U.S. law enforcement officers, U.S. military special forces and thousands of civilians across the country.
Krav Maga pulls out all of the body movements that traditional martial arts would instill into you from day one. Krav Maga actually only uses moves that are practical and are extremely easy to learn and remember. In my opinion this makes Krav Maga the best self-defense system for anyone beginners to experienced martial artist.
Remember Krav Maga is not a martial art it is a self-defense system. Krav Maga actually teaches you with practical scenarios and exhausting stress drills how to react to real world situations that you might find yourself in on the street. The method of stress drills that are used are actually quite impressive. I've been involved in 3 styles of Karate, 2 styles of Kung-Fu, and also a little Brazilian Jujitsu, I also dabbled in Tai-Chi for a little while and I feel that this is the most effective teaching system that I have come across.
The main problem with all the martial arts that I have been a part of, is that they are very hard to learn and remember when you are in a real world situation. Regular martial arts takes years and years to even see an improvement and that's with constant training and practice. Krav Maga was designed for people that didn't have a lot of time to train and practice. It was also designed to be very easy to learn and remember.
So, when your doing your research on self-defense don't rule out Krav Maga.
