Victor Marx - how to defend against the most commonly used punch

The man in blue is everyone's favorite all around nice guy, Fastest Gun Disarming man on the internet.
Victor Marx had a very rough childhood growing up and with his past almost behind him he is taking upon himself and go on a journey to help other kids who had similar problems as he does as a kid. I won't cover much on his background for i am just reviewing him on his videos on self defense.

If you want to know more about him feel free to check his own website in the beginning of the video.

Lets start the review off the bat.

"there are tons of martial arts out there - most of them are good but not all of them work"

i cannot stress that enough that there are too many misconceptions of practitioners believing what they learn can help them defend a street fight or defense themselves. What is most important is the understanding of what Martial Arts are and what are the practicalities of the Martial Art's technique.

"never leave your hand down, keep your hand up and keep it a distance, don't hold a fist"

I like the segment where he mentions the importance open palm than fist because creates a psychological effect to the third party when they look at who are the aggressor & defender at a glance. This is an interesting point that we don't see very often in the internet, so extra points to Victor Marx for pointing that out.

"most common type of punch is a Right Hook/Haymaker/etc."

This isn't a debate wether he is right or wrong about the most common type of punches, majority of the people are right handed so your chances of getting attacked by a right hook are higher. Especially to untrained people. The main point he is trying to make is for you to keep your hands up to create a shield, physically & psychologically. Any form of defense is better than getting a fist straight to the head.

"big difference between a fighter & self defender"

Check out some of Victor Marx amazing demonstration in gun disarming for it is definitely cool to watch

An Article about Krav Maga

Krav Maga For Self Defense
If you are looking to get into martial arts for sport, style or fines then I would say that Krav Maga is not for you. Bottom line this is a no BS self-defense system. It is the official self-defense system of the Israeli Special Forces and has been taught U.S. law enforcement officers, U.S. military special forces and thousands of civilians across the country.
Krav Maga pulls out all of the body movements that traditional martial arts would instill into you from day one. Krav Maga actually only uses moves that are practical and are extremely easy to learn and remember. In my opinion this makes Krav Maga the best self-defense system for anyone beginners to experienced martial artist.
Remember Krav Maga is not a martial art it is a self-defense system. Krav Maga actually teaches you with practical scenarios and exhausting stress drills how to react to real world situations that you might find yourself in on the street. The method of stress drills that are used are actually quite impressive. I've been involved in 3 styles of Karate, 2 styles of Kung-Fu, and also a little Brazilian Jujitsu, I also dabbled in Tai-Chi for a little while and I feel that this is the most effective teaching system that I have come across.
The main problem with all the martial arts that I have been a part of, is that they are very hard to learn and remember when you are in a real world situation. Regular martial arts takes years and years to even see an improvement and that's with constant training and practice. Krav Maga was designed for people that didn't have a lot of time to train and practice. It was also designed to be very easy to learn and remember.
So, when your doing your research on self-defense don't rule out Krav Maga.

Self Defense Reviews - Essential informations for self defense

People tend to forget there are Senior Self defense as well

Learning is a process of repetition of reviews and revisions. You may have learn many new techniques from your Krav Maga or self defense Masters from a gym. However in a cognitive process of learning it is important to repeat the process by reviewing. A learning process consist of learning multiple point of views and adapting to your own understanding.

I highly encourage those who are already experts and are learning from experts to keep an open-mind of other disciplines and their methods, the more we learn the more well prepared we may become.

Those who are already interested feel free to skip the rest and click here to get started of learning essential techniques of self defense.

Below are some tips to consider when it comes down to any self-defense situations. Conscious or unconscious, prepared or unprepared scenarios.

Courtesy of Youtube's Dabbler.
Review of the video above:
1) Avoid & be aware of potential dangers & threats around you
2) Breath and stay calm. Put yourself in a calm state of mind
3) Communicating with confidence, but not hostile!
4) Don't make the situation any worst.
5) Environment & Exits
6) Fire! (although not limited, calling FIRE attracts more attention over the word help)
7) Get away! Always find an opportunity to get away.
8) Hit hard hit fast hit first. (when all else have failed)

His point No.8 may contradict point No.4 however we keep an open-mind where everyone have their own methods and ideas on how one should protect themselves. What is most important is to be aware of the possible options available because any emergency situations are always unpredictable, so sometimes situation may contradict what you've learnt and thats when his point No. 8 can be a life-safer when all else fails.  (its never the most effective solution but a valid solution when there are no other ways)

Krav Maga - Contact Combat

As I previously mentioned street fighting is one of all true core expressions of a human being. Emotions such as anger, hate, rage and above all else fear are all mixed into a 5 minute period that fully dictates ones actions. It is a completely different ball game from the rules and referees in a comfort of a competition.

Street Fighting have no rules, no rounds & time limits and most of all people are fighting with their LIFES at stake.

Once again Martial Arts are amazing in all shapes and forms, those who are well trained and for many years are blessed with an advantage to be able to defend themselves. However what about those who are never trained in any self-defense/martial arts before? How about the common citizens who knows nothing about throwing a fist at someone? What about if the victim is only a child? What can they do to quickly learn to defend themselves when needed?

Krav Maga - Contact Combat
One solution to that would be to learn a self defense system call Krav Maga

Krav Maga is a self defense system developed and trained officially by the Israeli Military & Defense Forces. It has been taught to hundreds of law enforcement agencies & and tens of thousands of normal civilians all over the world and are now one of the worlds most popular self defense system around.

Krav Maga is an advanced Israeli Self Defense System designed to give real solutions to any violent situations one may encounter. The effectiveness of this system is in part due to its simplicity and reliance on your already existing instincts.

Women & Children Friendly

Based on simple principles and instinctive movements, this reality-based system is designed to teach real self defense in the shortest possible time. Learn to defend against common chokes, grabs, and bearhugs, as well as weapons such as guns, knives, and sticks.
